Terms of Service
Kanji Daily · last updated 23 August 2026
Kanji Daily is a free educational video project run by one person. These terms cover this website and the videos it publishes.
1. What the project is
Kanji Daily ("the project") is operated by Robert Scott, an individual based in the United States of America. It publishes a short video each day about one Japanese character, on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. This website exists to describe the project and to host these terms and the privacy policy.
2. There is no account, and no charge
The project offers nothing to sign up for and charges nothing. Watching the videos is governed by the terms of whichever platform you watch them on — YouTube, Instagram or TikTok — not by these terms. Nothing here grants you rights against those platforms, and nothing here changes their rules.
3. Educational use, and the limits of automation
The lessons are generated automatically from public Japanese dictionaries. That process is careful but not infallible: a character can have several readings, dictionary senses are not always ordered by how common they are, and the software occasionally picks a less useful one. Corrections are made by hand as they are found.
So: treat the videos as study material, not as an authority. They are not a substitute for a teacher, a textbook, or a dictionary you can check. Do not rely on them where accuracy matters — translation of anything consequential, exam preparation, tattoos, or anything else you cannot easily undo. If you spot an error, please report it to the address below; that is genuinely how the data gets better.
4. Content and licensing
The videos are built from several sources, each under its own terms:
| Part | Source and licence |
|---|---|
| Stroke order data and the animations derived from it | KanjiVG by Ulrich Apel, licensed CC BY-SA 3.0. Work derived from it is offered under the same licence, with attribution. |
| Readings, meanings and example vocabulary | KANJIDIC2 and JMdict, © the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group, used under the EDRDG licence. |
| Typefaces | DotGothic16 and Press Start 2P, SIL Open Font License 1.1. |
| Music, artwork, narration and the video edit | Original, © the operator. All rights reserved except as stated above. |
Every video description carries these credits. If you reuse any part of a video, carry them too, and respect the share-alike condition on the stroke-order material.
5. Using the videos
You may watch, share and link to the videos freely, and use them for personal study or in a classroom. Please do not re-upload them as your own work, strip the credits, or use them to train a model that reproduces them. Requests to use the material in some other way are usually granted — just ask.
6. Third-party rights
The visual style is original: every element is drawn procedurally, and the music is synthesised, precisely so that nothing in a video belongs to anyone else. If you nonetheless believe the project has used something of yours without permission, write to the address below with the details and it will be investigated and, where warranted, removed.
7. No warranty
The website and the videos are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of accuracy, merchantability, or fitness for a particular purpose. The project is run by one person as a side project; it may pause, change, or stop at any time, and no continuity is promised.
8. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the operator is not liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential loss arising from your use of the website or the videos, including loss arising from reliance on an incorrect reading or translation. Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.
9. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, and the courts of the State of California have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute. If you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live.
10. Changes
These terms may be updated; the revised version will be posted here with a new date. Continuing to use the website or watch the videos after a change means accepting the updated terms.
